About – Absecon Island Surfing History
Please note that the Changes to Absecon Island Surf History is in preparation to move to a new site. This will soon be located at:
www.History-of-Surfing.com/Absecon-Island-NJ
Other sites will be added starting with New Jersey:
www.History-of-Surfing.com/Ocean-City-NJ
www.History-of-Surfing.com/Long-Beach-Island-NJ
etc.
Beyond that it is the intent to support any area or topic that is relevant to surfing history. I hope to have this accomplished in conjunction with the release of the new movie by Eric Jordan “Paving the Wave”, a documentary to tell the story of the ancestry and birth of modern surfing and the surf industry.

Thanks for your support.
This is a site where the cumulative knowledge and history of Surfing on Absecon Island NJ can be gathered and preserved. It is hopefully a living document that will be sustained by the Absecon Island Surfing Community and allow all to reflect on the past.
So when I reflect on the past I come to a single conclusion…if it were not for surfing I would have little to go back to. This was never apparent until Sandy (Hookerman) Kriger and Steve Slakoff organized a reunion of the former Curcio Surf Team and Down Beach Surf Club. From that event it became clear to me that aside from family, surfing was the glue to my life. It is a community that never dissolved and has held a lot of people together as they walked their divergent paths.
This history is started from that event, it will look back to people I never knew or met and be passed on to people that I do not yet know. At this time I have to extend the deepest of appreciation to Dan Mittleman. Dan was the original surf photographer of Absecon Island, he was the unknowing historian of the group. For all of us who threw away the announcements of a surf film coming to town, discarded mementos, cut up their copies of Surfer; Dan has preserved our past. Not as much as he would have liked, but enough to bring an incredible response from the people who have seen his photos and magazine articles.
